Illusionist Derren Brown has never claimed to have psychic abilities but instead introduces his performances as the now quotable blend of “magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship”. So on his new project, Derren Brown Investigates which began on May 10, he turns his scary eyes to the paranormal claims of mediums and their ilk to uncover the methods using his knowledge of the skills involved.
In the opening episode he visits Liverpool to see Joe Power, a man who says he can speak to the dead, and examines his methods, then explains the step-by-step process that he believes is behind Power’s, well, powers.
Derren Brown New Channel 4 Series
His previous escapade, Derren Brown: The Events, saw him conduct a series of live experiments on the human mind to influence the outcome of certain events. This exercise wasn’t quite well received by the extremely easy to please internet community, the Lottery guessing episode offended keyboard warriors the most, so perhaps by setting his sights on targets that are more disliked than himself may curry favour with the disenfranchised.
