With the Phoenix Coyotes looking like they are going to be kept on life-support by the NHL and the taxpayers of Glendale, Arizona for another year the hope for Winnipeg to get an NHL franchise for the 2011-12 season has turned to Atlanta. For Winnipeggers there is real cause for optimism.
Both the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and ESPN, and other media, reported Monday, May 16, 2011 that negotiations are taking place between the Thrashers and True North Sports and Entertainment, a Winnipeg-based company, that would result in the team being sold to True North and moved to Winnipeg in time for the upcoming NHL season.
Thrashers GM Admits Exploring "Options"
The Thrashers, who came into the league in 1999, have long been rumored to be seeking a buyer as the club suffers from poor attendance and financial difficulties . The current ownership group, the 'Atlanta Spirit,' say they have lost $130 million over the past six seasons.
